Book Review - Runes

Runes

Runes Series

June 8, 2013

Received from NetGalley

Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.

Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.

Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only are she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life

Review

I was thoroughly confused with this book at first. This was the first book I got from NetGalley to read, so it could just be the formatting for NG screwing with it. Everything ran together, there wouldn't be new dialogue paragraphs it was all just one giant lump, and hardly any of the paragraphs were indented. Okay, formatting rant is over now.

This book reminded me a lot of Twilight. I want to be with you, but I'm no good for you, but I love you, but you can't love me... blah, blah, blah. For that reason I was getting a bit bored with it until things started to kick into gear which was at about 50% - 60% competed.

I definitely had a few moments when I needed to pick my jaw up off the floor. I so didn't see those events coming. I had no clue what the Immortals actually were until one of the characters basically told Raine she was stupid and spelled it out for her. I guess I'm stupid too because I knew all of what Raine knew, haha.

I definitely want to read the rest of these books because it ended on a happy, but what's the matter with you for leaving a cliff hanger like that note.

I almost forgot to mention the writing and the cover. I felt like it was choppy at parts, and didn't flow super well sometimes. For the cover I feel like as amateur photoshopper I could have done a way better job at making something to pique someone's interest to pick up the book.

This books is going to get four stars from me because I was really thrown off by the fromatting and the choppiness did not make me a happy camper. But I'm dying to read the next book so I the author did a good job with a very unique idea.
